All About Wetends

Fairly simply.

The impeller spinning causes compression that pulls/sucks water through the front hole/fitting and forces water OUT of the wetend out the discharge hole/fitting of the wetend.

Most suction fittings are in the center as shown to the right. It maximizes the efficiency of the impeller. The pump shown on the right is a side top discharge which is also the most common. Some wetends discharge from the center of the wetend.

Parts of a Pump/Wetend

Faceplate-Most wetends use style shown. Some use a larger faceplate that includes the volute.
Wear Ring-Your wetend could have a separate floating ring or already built into faceplate.
Impeller-Determines the horsepower of the wetend.
Seal-2 part mechnical seal that stops the wetend from leaking.
Large Oring-Seals the 2 parts that make the body of the wetend.
Volute/Body-Most are as shown but some models have the volute on the faceplate and this is simply a flat piece.

Wetends for spas come in TWO frame sizes.

48 Frame-Once popular is now being phased out. As shown the distance between bolt holes is 3 5/8". The actual size of the wetend can be either size but the location of the bolt hole is what determines frame.

56 Frame-Popular on larger horsepower motors. As shown the distance is 4 1/8".

56f wetends and motors have a larger circumference than 48f. Some wetends have dual holes so they can be used on either size.

Pumps discharge commonly come it one of two ways:

CENTER Discharge-Water output is directly above center of wetend. This is most common wetends rated .5-1.5hp

SIDE Discharge-Water output is to right as shown. This is most common on wetends rated above 1.5hp

Jacuzzi Hot Tubs used a special pattern for the wetend's bolts that allow the pump to face more directions.

The left example is a Jacuzzi Hot Tub with their 8 bolt nuts. On the right is a standard 4 socket wetend.

The Jacuzzi design allows for more choice of direction.

"12 o'clock" position is the most common but your pump might be pointed these other direction.

Its easy to change the pump orientation. Remove loosen the 4 long bolts on the back of the motor that will release the wetend. Turn the wetend to match your needs. Align and tighten the bolts.
